Foundation Mathematics for Learners of English

The Foundation Mathematics for Learners of English (FMLE) course is designed for students who have previously studied mathematics in Arabic, and are preparing to do a university-level mathematics course delivered in English.

The course aims to:

  • introduce students to the language of mathematics in English, including approximately 500 mathematical terms
  • introduce students to the mathematical notation used in English
  • provide revision of mathematical techniques needed for real-world problem solving
  • develop language skills needed to understand mathematical word problems presented in English, and to explain how they solved problems
  • increase English language reading speeds
  • develop students' study skills, particularly note-taking and independent learning skills.

The FMLE course consists of a coursebook, a write-on workbook, a teacher resource, and a companion website containing more than 200 interactive exercises and tests.

Coursebook

Each unit of the coursebook is presented with key mathematics vocabulary highlighted. Students discover the meaning of highlighted words in context and from the online glossary.

The coursebook introduces students to 140 mathematical symbols and abbreviations.

Worked examples show how mathematics is applied to solve problems.

Teacher Resource Book

For each unit in the course, the Teacher Resource includes:

  • the learning outcomes of the unit
  • a list of key vocabulary introduced in the unit
  • a list of symbols introduced in the unit
  • notes on differences between the mathematical notations used in Arabic and English
  • class activities to introduce topics and to consolidate learning
  • transcripts of listening exercises
  • answers to written questions in the workbook
  • a description of online exercises and tests.

Write-on Workbook

The write-on workbook covers topics including:

  • basic numeracy
  • algebra
  • coordinate geometry
  • trigonometry
  • probability
  • statistics.

Each unit of the workbook contains:

  • a summary of new vocabulary, symbols, and important formulae
  • written exercises which require students to:
    • use new mathematical vocabulary
    • read and write mathematical notation
    • apply mathematical concepts
    • solve word problems.

Online Course

Over 200 online exercises and tests help learners acquire mathematical vocabulary, revise and apply the mathematics from each unit, and improve their four language skills in the context of mathematics.

Each unit of the online course is divided into four sections:

  • The Review section contains a brief summary of the mathematics, vocabulary, and symbols introduced in the unit.
  • The Practice section contains exercises to help students:
    • revise the mathematics from the unit
    • improve their speaking and spelling in English
    • improve their English-language keyboarding skills.
  • The Listening section contains sound files for listening practice, with writing tasks to be completed in the workbook.
  • The Test section requires students to:
    • complete sentences using mathematical vocabulary
    • find and correct spelling mistakes and other errors
    • read and write mathematical expressions
    • take notes while reading texts or listening to sound files, and use these notes to answer questions
    • perform calculations with or without a calculator
    • solve problems.

The online course includes an extensive glossary. Glossary entries include not only important mathematical terms, but also vocabulary that occurs frequently in mathematics texts and examinations that may not be known to foundation students. Each glossary entry includes a definition, its part of speech, and an example of the word used in a sentence. Most entries include a sound file, a translation of the headword into Arabic, words from the same word family, and some common phrases that include these words.
